Out Now: New Volume of 'Written Artefacts as Cultural Heritage'

The second issue of the series ‘Written Artefacts as Cultural Heritage’ provides Arabic, French and Spanish translations of the much-acclaimed manual ‘Be prepared: Guidelines for small museums for writing a disaster preparedness plan’. It is available open access.

TAG: Name Writing in Public Space

The TAG Conference is the spearhead event in graffiti studies. This year, it comes to Hamburg for the first time, as part of the programme accompanying the exhibition 'EINE STADT WIRD BUNT' and in partnership with CSMC. The opening event takes place on 29 June with keynotes lectures at SUB Hamburg.

Written Treasures of Hamburg

Starting in July, an exhibition on the ‘Written Treasures of Hamburg’ will show highlights from the holdings of the Hamburg State Library, demonstrating how research at CSMC employs individual objects to develop overarching approaches to understanding written artefacts of all eras and places.

Secret Messages in a Miniature Qur'an

At the Bodleian Library in Oxford, two members of the Cluster made a remarkable find: written on the pages of a miniature Qur’an, they found an encrypted message from the 16th century. Patiently, they decoded the encrypted text. Yet, the solution of this puzzle confronted them with many new ones.

German-Jewish Archives in the Digital Age

Beyond Visualising Language

From 11-12 May 2023, a CSMC workshop at Deichtorhallen Hamburg revolves around the art of writing and writing as a form of art. Six artists present their works on site and, in conversation with researchers and the audience, explore the relationship between language, writing, meaning, and aesthetics.

DESY and UWA are Jointly Breaking New Ground in the Material Analysis of Historical Written Artefacts

In two pilot studies, scientists from Hamburg investigate historical written artefacts at the X-ray radiation source PETRA III. The experiments revolve around Mesopotamian clay tablets and Tibetan artefacts belonging to the Bon tradition.
