Markus Fischer, spokesperson of the Research Field 'Artefact Profiling' at the Cluster of Excellence UWA, has been accepted as a member of the European Academy of Science and Arts (EASA).
At a ceremony at the University of Salzburg on 15 April 2023, the European Academy of Science and Arts welcomed 38 new members from eleven nations to its prestigious transnational network of scientists, artists, politicians, and intellectual leaders. Among them was Markus Fischer, spokesperson of the Research Field ‘Artefact Profiling’ (RFA) at the Cluster of Excellence ‘Understanding written Artefacts’. At Universität Hamburg, Markus Fischer is also Head of the Department of Chemistry and the Director of the Hamburg School of Food Science (HSFS).
The ceremony was opened by Brigitta Pallauf, President of the Salzburg Parliament. The keynote speech was given by Verica Trstenjak, Professor of European Union Law, former Advocate General at the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in Luxembourg, and Member of the Management Board of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA). Her talk addressed the topic of ‘Human Rights in the Digital Age: Will Algorithms Triumph over Humanity?’

EASA is a non-governmental European association dedicated to promoting scientific and societal progress. As an academic forum, the European Academy of Sciences and Arts addresses a wide range of key topics and issues in an interdisciplinary manner to develop possible solutions. It currently has around 2,000 members from all parts of the world, including 37 Nobel laureates. New members are nominated by a committee on the basis of their achievements in research, education, and society and selected by the Academy Senate.
