In and through schooling, writing and written artefacts support children and youth’s learning, their capacity to draw interdisciplinary connections, and their awareness and maintenance of their cultural and linguistic identities, particularly in today’s highly diverse urban communities. In our school projects we work with children on written artefacts, writing systems, and literacy practices from a variety of regional and cultural contexts and historical times. We also work with teachers and education scholars to develop written-artefact-based curriculum materials for school subjects ranging from chemistry to religion or the arts. Fostering students’ and teachers’ appreciation of cultural diversity as a learning resource and community asset, these collaborations support on a local level the UN’s global development goals in the area of education.
