New Faces at CSMC

At the beginning of October, we welcome new members, Petra Kappert Fellows, and visiting researchers at CSMC.
New members
Said Aljoumani has joined CSMC to lead, together with Konrad Hirschler and Guy Burak (NYU), The al-Jazzar Library Project, which will write the history of the library founded by the Ottoman governor of the province of Sidon, Ahmad Pasha al-Jazzar (d. 1804). Before coming to Hamburg, he was an Einstein Guest Researcher at the Institute of Islamic Studies at FU Berlin.
Leah Comeau has joined the Cluster of Excellence on 1 October. Before coming to Hamburg, she was an Associate Professor of Religion at Saint Joseph’s University. At the Cluster, she will be involved in the Research Field ‘Inscribing Spaces’ and pursue a project on ‘Flowers for Tamil Gods: Material Religion, Ephemeral Artefacts, and Texts’.
Laura Gallardo Dominguez is a new Research Associate in the project ‘Multiscale materials characterization as a function of processing methods for novel and ancient palm-leaf manuscripts’, led by Patrick Huber. She received her BA in physics from the University of Seville and an MA from Universität Münster. At the Cluster, she will analyse the impact of different inks on different paper types as well as the physical changes upon the application of ink with different writing tools.
Petra Kappert Fellows
Chiara Ruzzier joins us a Petra Kappert Fellow from 1 October to 31 October and again from 15 January to 15 February 2023. She is a Lecturer in Medieval Latin, Heuristics of Middle Ages, and Italian Literature at the Université de Namur. At CSMC, she will be preparing a project on the architecture of Latin pandect Bibles during the Middle Ages.
Visiting researchers
Suzanne Burdorf joins CSMC as a visiting researcher for two months, from 1 October until 30 November. She is a PhD student at Ghent University, where she is working on a project entitled ‘A Study on Chinese Phonetic Loan Characters in Dunhuang Manuscripts Dating from 700–1000 CE’.
Carolin Gluchowski joins CSMC as a visiting researcher for three months, from 1 October until 31 December. She is pursuing a PhD in Medieval and Modern Languages at New College, University of Oxford, where she is working on a thesis entitled ‘Producing Private Prayerbooks: Female Agency and Reform Theology in Manuscripts of a North-German Convent’.
Elif Ünal also joins us a visiting researcher for three months, from 1 October to 31 December. She is pursuing a PhD in Islamic Studies at the Faculty of Theology at Istanbul University and will be working on her project ‘Analysis of the Qur'an manuscript with Inventory Number 358 at TIEM Museum’ while at CSMC.
