CSMC Involved in Conference on Arabic-Script Manuscripts in Africa

This September, six of our members and associates will contribute to the online conference 'Arabic-Script Manuscripts in Africa' in various capacities.
From 12 to 16 September 2021, several members and associates of the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures will participate in the online conference ‘Arabic-Script Manuscripts in Africa‘, jointly organised by Bibliotheca Alexandrina and The Islamic Manuscript Association in partnership with the Bibliotheca’s Manuscripts Centre and the Thesaurus Islamicus Foundation.

Dr Darya Ogorodnikova—research associate in the Facing New Technologies Working Group—will speak about Islamic manuscripts and scholarly networks in Senegambia and Mali.

Dr Jonathan Brockopp—member of the Kairouan Manuscript Project leadership team and professor of history, religious studies, and philosophy at Pennsylvania State University—will present his research on the history of the manuscript collections of the National Laboratory for the Preservation and Conservation of Parchment and Manuscripts in Raqqada, Kairouan, Tunisia.

Dr Dmitry Bondarev— Principal Investigator of two projects in the Cluster of Excellence Understanding Written Artefacts and the head of the Project Ajami Lab—will discuss Kanuri and Kanembu Qur’anic commentaries and poetical works.

Dr Maria Luisa Russo—field manager for manuscript projects in Mali—will give a keynote address titled ‘Beyond Our Libraries’ Door: Cultural Heritage Preservation and Social Challenges’, chair the conference panel on historical traditions of Arabic-script manuscripts in Africa, and lead a workshop on preservation and digitisation planning for library collections.

As executive director of The Islamic Manuscript Association, Davidson MacLaren—a former Petra Kappert Fellow and a member of Kairouan Manuscript Project leadership team whom the CSMC recently appointed research associate for cultural heritage and member of the Ethics Working Group—is part of the event’s organisation and planning committee.
- Kristine Rose-Beers, ACR—a new member of the Kairouan Manuscript Project leadership team, an elected director of The Islamic Manuscript Association, and the head of conservation at the Chester Beatty—was part of the paper selection committee.
