Arabic Music Theory and Music in Manuscripts of the Latin Middle Ages
2023–2025
RFH08
The project focuses on traces of Arabic music and music theory in Latin medieval Western European manuscripts as multilingual phenomena. Three case studies are devoted to the use of Arabic terminology in diagrams in Latin music treatises, the materialization of Arabic music theory in Latin translations of al-Fārābī's writings; and references to Arabic texts and music in Western European compositions. They address for the first time the reception, dissemination routes, and challenges of acculturating Arabic music and music theory in the Latin Middle Ages from a perspective including the material evidence of the manuscripts.
