A winter school on ‘Cuneiform Culture and the Akkadian Language’ will take place from 20-24 February 2023. The course is taught at introductory level and participation is open to students from all backgrounds.
The Akkadian language was the main language of Mesopotamia from the middle of the 3rd millennium to the end of the 1st millennium BCE. It was noted with cuneiform signs – like most of the languages of the Near East at that time. From 20-24 February 2023, the winter school ‘Cuneiform Culture and the Akkadian Language’ will provide a general introduction to this language and way of writing, employing a hands-on approach with many practical exercises.
The course is primarily aimed to BA and MA students. Interested doctoral students are welcome as well.
Lectures will be held by Cécile Michel, who is the Principal Investigator of two projects dealing with cuneiform tablets and the Assyrian manuscript culture at the Cluster of Excellence: ‘Reading Closed Cuneiform Tablets Using High-Resolution Computed Tomography’ (together with Christian Schroer and Stephan Olbrich) and ‘Archives and Literacy in 2nd Millennium Assyrian Manuscript Culture'.
In contrast to previous editions of this winter school, next year's course will be held in person again. It will not be possible to attend online.
