Introduction
The MA program Manuscript Cultures is a one-year course (60 CP) that conveys central topics in the field of general manuscript research combined with specific skills. The degree program promotes the independent, critical, and analytical work with manuscripts. Students will learn how to conduct cultural and scientific examination of the texts, images, notes and diagrams contained in the manuscripts, including the scientific material analysis. They will develop creative approaches to solving complex scientific and scholarly questions. The range of manuscript cultures covered includes Asian, African, and European cultures.
Admission Requirements
University Degree
A first qualifying degree (BA/Magister Artium/Diplom) from a German or recognized foreign university in one of the subjects taught in the program (African Studies, Ancient History, Art History, Assyriology, Classical Archaeology, Coptology, Ethiopian Studies, Greek Studies, Historical Musicology, Indology, Indonesian and Malay Studies, Iranian Studies, Islamic Studies, Japanese Studies, Jewish Studies, Medieval and Modern History, Sinology, Thai Studies, Turkology, Vietnamese Studies) or a related one.
In exceptional cases, the above access requirements may be derogated from the fact that due to special circumstances, at least equivalent qualification and suitability may be assumed.
Applicants who have completed their undergraduate studies, but have not received their degree certificate yet may submit the certificate by the end of the first semester of the master’s program. Please see the “Documents to submit” section below for details.
Additional Special Admissions Requirements
All applicants must provide evidence of proficiency in English equivalent to B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). (Native speakers of English need not submit a language proof.)

Recognition of Transcripts for Degree Programs Completed at Foreign Higher Education Institutions
If you obtained your first degree abroad, your certificate will be reviewed during the application procedure in the faculty of your program. If your degree certificate is not in English or German, please include a copy of a certified English or German translation of this together with your application documents.

Online Application
You will need to complete the online application available on Universität Hamburg’s application portal during the application period: www.uni-hamburg.de/online-application Please create a user account, enter your information online, and submit your application online. You will then need to print your online application as a PDF document and submit it together with the following documents to the email address or contact indicated below. You do not need to submit paper documents.

- Degree certificate or provisional Transcript of Records
If you cannot yet provide a final certificate containing your grades, please submit your current Transcript of Records confirming your provisional grade point average. You will then need to submit your degree certificate by the end of the first semester of your master’s program. - Proof of English language proficiency (at level B2 or higher)
- Letter of motivation
In a concise letter (1 page max.), please explain what motivates you to study Manuscript Cultures, and which subject area your research interest would fall into. (For an exemplary list of subjects, see the section „University Degree“ above). - Curriculum Vitae
