Subject-Specific Provisions for the Master of Arts in Manuscript Cultures in the Faculty of Humanities

On 22 December 2017 in accordance with Section 108 subsection 1 of the Hamburg higher education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG), the Executive University Board of Universität Hamburg ratified the Subject-Specific Provisions for the Master of Arts in Manuscript Cultures adopted by the Faculty of Humanities on 6 September 2017 pursuant to Section 91 subsection 2 no. 1 HmbHG dated 18 July 2001 (HmbGVBl. p. 171) as amended on 28 November 2017 (HmbGVBl. p. 365).
Preamble
These Subject-Specific Provisions supplement the Examination Regulations of the Faculty of Humanities at Universität Hamburg dated 6 May 2015, as amended, which govern the Master of Arts degree programmes and provide a description of the modules for the Master of Arts in Manuscript Cultures.
I. Supplemental provisions
Section 1
Programme and examination objectives, academic degree, and implementation of the degree programme
Section 1 subsection 1:
The Manuscript Cultures degree programme conveys central topics in the field of general manuscript research combined with specific skills. The degree programme promotes the independent, analytical work with manuscripts. Students learn how to conduct cultural and scientific examination of the texts, images, notes and diagrams contained in the manuscripts, including the scientific material analysis. They develop creative approaches to solving complex scientific and scholarly questions. The range of manuscript cultures covered includes Asian, African, and European cultures.
Section 1 subsection 3:
The academic degree Master of Arts will be conferred.
Section 1 subsection 4:
The Faculty of Humanities is responsible for administering the degree programme.

Programme and exam organization, modules, and ECTS credits
Section 4 subsections 2 and 3:
(1) Modules for the Master of Arts in Manuscript Cultures, totalling 60 ECTS credits:
a) The following required modules must be completed:
- Module MC-1 (12 ECTS credits) Manuscript Cultures in the Humanities
- Module MC-2 (12 ECTS credits) Manuscript Cultures in the Natural Sciences
- Module MC-MA-WB (6 ECTS credits) free elective area
- MC-Thesis Module (MC-Abschluss) (30 ECTS credits)
The master’s degree programme will be complete upon concluding the module, MC-Thesis Module, totalling 30 ECTS credits. It includes the composition of a master’s thesis (28 ECTS credits) and participation in a colloquium (2 ECTS credits).
(2) In the free elective area (6 ECTS credits), students will have the opportunity to select elective courses from the degree programme as well as Studium Generale courses according to their own interest. The elective area thus serves to reinforce interdisciplinary expertise, and enables students to strengthen their interdisciplinary skills, allowing them to gain knowledge in other subject areas, and to think outside the boundaries of their specialization. Students have the option of choosing introductory language and/or subject-specific courses in order to acquire the required methodological knowledge to pursue a specialization or greater knowledge of an individual topic.

Section 14
Master’s thesis
Section 14 subsection 2 sentence 1:
In order to be allowed to commence work on the master’s thesis at least one of the modules, MC-1 or MC-2, must have been successfully completed.
Section 14 subsection 7 sentence 1:
Students shall have five months in which to complete their master's thesis and it will be worth 28 ECTS credits in the programme.

Evaluation of examinations
Section 15 subsection 3 sentence 9:
The module examinations contribute to the overall final grade for the master’s degree as follows: 30 percent for MC-1, 30 percent for MC-2, and 70 percent for the final module.

Expected coursework (reports, essays, oral presentations, practical courses, etc.) will be announced in detail at the start of every course. Type of examination: Written term paper within the framework of the seminar or equivalent written work in accordance with the requirements set forth in Section 13 subsection 5. Effective date of the provisions
These Subject-Specific Provisions become effective on the day following official publication by Universität Hamburg. They apply to students commencing their studies from the Winter Semester 2017/2018.
