Choreographies of Archiving
A Cross-Cultural Study of Archiving Practices in Contemporary Dance
2020–2023
RFE05
What role do written artefacts play in the production, performance, reconstruction, and revival of choreography? Which practices are used to develop, to document and to archive an ephemeral art form such as dance? Are there different cultural practices of producing written artefacts for choreographic work? Based on these three main lines of inquiry, “Choreographies of Archiving” examines the archiving practices of choreographers in Europe (Germany), Asia (Japan) and Africa (Senegal) by regarding the production of written artefacts, itself to be a genuine component of artistic production. Using intersectional methodology, archiving practices in dance are examined via a cross-cultural approach as they relate to different materialities, specific medialities, as well as individual dance techniques.
