Over the course of its history, the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures (CSMC), as well as its predecessor, the SFB 950 ‘Manuscript Cultures in Asia, Africa and Europe’, has housed or been involved with a wide variety of completed research projects.

Funded by the DFG, the SFB 950 'Manuscript Cultures in Asia, Africa and Europe’ was the first to integrate projects from the Europeanist disciplines. In its first phase from 2011 to 2015, the programme of the SFB dealt with paratexts, visual organisation, and collections. During its second phase from 2015 to 2020, new fields of enquiry were learning, ritual and agency.
