Manuscripts and Narratives Fostering Institutional Diachronic Identity: The Case of St Gall Abbey and Its Chronicler Ekkehard IV (d. After 1057)
Professor Dr Andreas Haug (Universität Würzburg) and Professor Dr Felix Heinzer (Universität Freiburg)
Andreas Haug and Felix Heinzer, dealing with the eleventh-century St Gall monk Ekkehard IV, ask for the potential of manuscripts representing earlier periods of the abbey’s history, still available to the eleventh-century author purposefully interweaving them in his narrative. The two speakers will propose to consider these artefacts as intentional material references in the service of cultural memory, contributing to shape the monastic community’s ‘diachronic identity’.
