With the beginning of the winter semester, a new cohort of students has started studying the MA programme ‘Manuscript Cultures’ at our Graduate School. With its equal share of modules in the humanities and the natural sciences, the programme is unique in Germany.
Consisting of 22 students from 11 countries, a new cohort of students has commenced their MA studies at our Cluster. They come from China, France, Georgia, Germany, India, Iran, Jordan, the Netherlands, Russia, Türkiye, and the United States. Their areas of interest are as diverse as their nationalities, ranging from Archaeometry and Chemistry to Armenian, Ethiopian, Greek, Icelandic, Iranian, Islamic, Jewish, and Ottoman Studies, among others. More than 100 people had applied to participate in the programme this year.
The MA ‘Manuscript Cultures’ consists of modules in the humanities and the natural sciences in equal proportions, making it unique in Germany. The modules in the humanities include, among others, introductions to codicology, paleography, textual criticism, and cataloging. The modules in the natural sciences cover the relevant basics in physics, chemistry, and biology, and provide an instruction to the theory and methods of scientific materials analysis of manuscripts.
The programme is overseen by Shervin Farridnejad, Head of the MA, and Merryl Rebello, coordinator of the Graduate School at the CSMC. More information on the contents, relevant application deadlines, and qualifying scholarships is available on the website of the Graduate School.
