In pre-modern times, master calligraphers produced editions of the Qur’an that were smaller than a palm. In this video, Cornelius Berthold explains the function of miniature Qur'ans and scrutinises an astonishingly precise 14th-century description of these small manuscripts.
A German version of this video is available here. For more videos, please visit our ‘Films’ section.
Cornelius Berthold is a research associate at CSMC and a member of the working group 'Facing New Technologies' (FNT). He is working on the project 'The Last Decades of Arabic Manuscript Culture (1870–1930): Coexistence and Interaction with Printing'.
