The Roman Emperor Seen From Egypt
Interpreting Imperial Images on Roman Provincial Coinage and Sculpture
Dario Calomino and Giorgia Cafici
The Roman Emperor Seen from the Provinces is a research project funded by the ERC under the Horizon 2020 Programme and hosted by the University of Verona in 2021-2026. The project investigates how Roman emperors were represented on different visual media in the provinces, from Augustus to Diocletian (31 BCE – 297 CE), through a comparative analysis of coin and sculptural representations of members of the imperial family. This talk will present preliminary results of this novel integrated approach, which allows for a comprehensive study of the genesis, treatment and dissemination of the imperial image outside the Italian peninsula.
The paper will focus in particular on the case study of Roman Egypt to discuss the dependencies of provincial imagery from Roman metropolitan models as well as how these were reproduced and re-interpreted by local workshops on visual media. In the first part, Dario Calomino will talk about the genesis and development of the iconography of Roman emperors in full-figure on the coinage of Alexandria; in the second part, Giorgia Cafici will give an overview of the portraits of members of the imperial family found or produced in the province to discuss the main trends and patterns of production of imperial portraiture in Roman Egypt.
