From 15-19 July 2024, participants of our summer school on Hebrew Codicology will learn the basics of manuscript description and Hebrew palaeography and receive exposure to an expansive vision of current debates in Hebrew manuscript research.
The course will be taught by Javier del Barco, professor of Hebrew language and literature at the University of Madrid and a specialist in Hebrew codicology and palaeography. He is also a former Petra Kappert Fellow at the CSMC. The course is divided into five sessions, starting with a lesson on the Hebrew book in the middle ages (15 July). This is followed by sessions on materials of production (16 July), medieval Hebrew scripts (17 July), and catalogues and Hebrew codicology (18 July). On the final day of the course, participants will do a hands-on session at Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg Carl von Ossietzky (19 July).
The summer school is open to MA students and doctoral researchers from any programme on Jewish Studies. Postdocs with a research interest in Jewish and Hebrew manuscript culture and external participants with an interest in getting to know the basics of Hebrew codicology and manuscript description are invited as well. Participants should have taken at least two full years of Hebrew (Classical or Modern) or have at least an intermediate-level reading competence of Hebrew. The language of instruction will be English, therefore participants need to be able to use English fluently (B2 level or higher).
Applications can be submitted until 31 March 2024. For more information on the course and how to apply, please visit the website of the summer school.
