The Cluster of Excellence ‘Understanding Written Artefacts’ is looking for a Research Associate for the project ‘Between Heaven and Earth: Archival Practices of Ancient Mesopotamian Temples’.
The core responsibility of the research associate is to pursue their dissertation project within the overall comparative research profile of the Cluster of Excellence ‘Understanding Written Artefacts’, and to contribute to the collaborative research activities of the Cluster.
Candidates should have a degree in Assyriology or Ancient Near Eastern Studies, ideally with a focus on the study of archival/documentary texts in ancient Mesopotamia. Moreover, they should have
- expertise in manuscriptology
- experience in dealing with ancient written artefacts
- very good knowledge of written and spoken English
- language skills in Akkadian, preferably also in Sumerian
- experience in reading cuneiform
- experience in interdisciplinary work
- ability to work independently as a researcher as well as to work in a team
The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Cluster’s Graduate School and participate in research colloquia, lectures, and workshops. Furthermore, the position includes active engagement in Research Field E ‘Archiving Artefacts’, which in turn offers a great opportunity of working in an inspiring interdisciplinary team and to join the collaborative research activities of the Cluster.
The position is part-time (75% of standard work hours per week) and fixed term, with a duration of three years (1 February 2024 to 31 January 2027). Applications can be submitted until 25 December 2023. More information on the position and how to apply is available here.
