New Faces at CSMCThe Centre welcomes new and returning members

With the beginning of the new semester, we welcome several new and some returning CSMC members in various capacities: professors, senior professors, associated researchers at the Cluster of Excellence, and Petra-Kappert Fellows.

• Malachi Beit-Arié will join us as a Petra-Kappert Fellow, starting in October. It is his fourth fellowship at the Centre, which due to the circumstances he will do remotely this time.

• Xiaomeng He continues her stay at CSMC. She will develop a project on the archival history of Imperial China.

• Konrad Hirschler has commenced a professorship in Islamic Studies on 1 October. Previously, he was professor at the Institute of Islamic Studies at FU Berlin. At the Cluster of Excellence, he will be the new spokesperson of 'Archiving Artefacts' (Research Field E) and also a member of 'Creating Originals' (Research Field C).

• Diana Lange joins the Cluster as Principal Investigator of the project ‘Maps as Knowledge Resources and Mapmaking as Process: The Case of the Mapping of Tibet’, which belongs to 'Formatting Contents' (Reserach Field D). Previously, she was involved in the project ‘Coloured Maps’. The catalogue of the current exhibition at MARKK, which is based on this project, is now available on our website.

• Nurit Pasternak will start a Petra-Kappert Fellowship in November, carried out remotely. For her as well, it is the fourth fellowship at CSMC.

• Benedikt Reier is now part of the Cluster. He will be the Principal Investigator of the project ‘The Archival Topography of Medieval Jerusalem: Record Keeping in a Provincial Town’, which belongs to ‘Archiving Artefacts’. Previously, he was a doctoral fellow at the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies.

• Maren Elisabeth Schwab is a historian and a joint appointment by the Department of History and the Cluster. She is currently exploring the research fields and will soon determine which project to join.

• Tilman Seidensticker is now senior professor at the Centre. He joins us from Universität Jena, where he held a professorship in Islamic Studies. At the same time, he has been involved with the CSMC for many years: He is the spokesperson of the working group ‘Facing New Technologies’ and Principal Investigator of the project ‘The Last Decades of Arabic Manuscript Culture (1870–1930): Coexistence and Interaction with Printing’, which belongs to the working group 'Facing New Technologies'.

• Karin Wiedergut continues her Petra-Kappert Fellowship that she started in May. She will be involved in ‘Archiving Artefacts’ and work on a project on the public archives and notaries in Asia Minor.
