The fifth edition of the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures’ series Artefact of the Month (AoM), authored by Alexander Weinstock, has been published. Titled Traces of a Scandal. The Prompt Book for Friedrich Ludwig Schröder’s Othello Adaptation in Hamburg, the article describes the case of the opening night of Shakespear's Othello in Hamburg in 1776 that did not go as planned. The prompt book, which has been preserved to this day, bears testimony to this attempt to rescue a failing theatre production. The English edition can be accessed here and the German version here.
In every edition of Artefact of the Month, a new expert in the field of written artefacts shares the fascinating and unique stories behind a particular object in a compelling and approachable fashion. Editorial duties are overseen by Dr Wiebke Beyer and Karin Becker who greatly welcome ideas for future editions.
All editions can be accessed through the AoM archive. AoM is the successor of manuscript of the month, a publication with a similar, albeit narrower, thematic focus. A full archive of all 72 editions can be accessed here.
