Project Group: Navigating Multigraphic Written Artefacts
This project aims to develop advanced computer vision approaches to help researchers explore multigraphic written artefacts, where visual meaning is carried by combinations of scripts, images, layout and other visual cues. Humanities scholars will shape the work by identifying the visual concepts and organising principles that experts use when interpreting pages and sorting large collections, and by defining the pattern classes that the system should learn. Computer scientists will translate these insights by developing state-of-the-art methods for visual pattern selection and detection, and for text-based image retrieval that links scholarly descriptions to visual concepts at scale. Humanities researchers will then test, validate and refine the tools in realistic research settings, and assess how these methods change what can be discovered and how collections can be navigated.
