In the long-term project Tamilex, running from 2023 to 2047, researchers produce a historical dictionary of the Classical Tamil language. On 5 July, they will present their work to the public for the first time.
Tamilex, a long-term research project that is part of the Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Hamburg and affiliated with the CSMC, makes a major contribution to securing and understanding the vast body of classical Tamil literature. Although it belongs to the great literary traditions of the world, only fragments of it have been researched and translated into other languages so far. In ‘Tamilex’, researchers produce the first comprehensive electronic corpus of the most important classical Tamil texts from the first millennium. Until 2047, they will also create a bilingual historical lexicon and make all these materials available to the scholarly community and the public in the form of interactive online tools.
On 5 July, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, members of the project will open the doors for the public for the first time and showcase their recent work. Manuscripts, old books, digitisation, encoding, recitation – all these things will be released open access and open source, but on this special day the researchers are looking forward to receiving visitors, especially from the community of Tamilians abroad who support the project in various ways.
