Jointly curated by the CSMC and MARKK, the exhibition opened its doors in May 2020 and illuminated the manuscript culture of the Toba Batak people of North Sumatra. The artefacts on display covered a wide range of manuscripts made of tree bark and bamboo as well as various other written pieces serving a magical or medical purpose.
An exhibit catalogue has been published as edition 14, also titled ‘The Power of Writing: The Manuscript Culture of the Toba Batak from North Sumatra’, of CSMC’s academic journal series manuscript cultures. Professor Dr Jan van der Putten and Roberta Zollo served as editors. The full catalogue can be downloaded as a PDF file here.
