From the inception of the Sonderforschungsbereich ‘Manuscript Cultures in Asia, Africa and Europe’, the Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures’ fellows have played an important role in its activities. They have given lectures, organised workshops and conferences and contributed to CSMC’s publications. Most of them have become an active part of its international network, supporting its work even long after their physical departure. Fellows are invited only, applications are not possible.

Petra Kappert Fellows

Petra Kappert Fellows spend up to six months at CSMC. Since 2012, the Centre has welcomed more than 40 internationally renowned researchers as Petra Kappert Fellows.

Permanent Fellows

The CSMC awards permanent fellowships to outstanding colleagues who have substantially contributed to their fields and to CSMC alike.

Mercator Fellows

Mercator fellows are invited to do research at CSMC for at least two years.

J.P. Gumbert Fellows

The J.P. Gumbert Fellowship is connected to the J.P. Gumbert Dissertation Award, which is awarded annually by the CSMC for the best doctoral dissertation dealing with any aspect of the research on written artefacts. Winners receive a prize money of 5,000 Euro and are invited to a research stay at CSMC.

Guest Professorship ‘Gender in Manuscript Cultures’

The guest professorship ‘Genderin Manuscript Cultures’ (run as ‘Women in Manuscript Cultures’ until 2023) is awarded every semester to a scholar whose work centers gender or other dimensions of diversity and inequity as a research topic or lens.
