The Threefold Cord: Philology, Codicology, and Palaeography
Ciro Giacomelli (Padova University)
For many years, classical philology and palaeography followed largely separate paths, rarely intersecting in the study of manuscript traditions. However, since the mid-20th century, the situation has evolved. Today, it is widely recognized that the study of textual traditions benefits greatly from the tools provided by palaeography and codicology. To understand thoroughly the transmission of a work, it is essential to examine the artefacts that contain them from both a historical and, to some extent, an ‘archaeological’ and stratigraphical perspective. This lecture will focus on Greek texts and manuscripts, an area where such approaches can be particularly revealing. The relatively small and close-knit scholarly circles of Byzantium from the 12th to the 14th centuries, combined with the limited number of scribes in Renaissance Italy, often allow for the identification of specific copyists, patrons, and owners, and in general the settings of production and transmission of given manuscripts. These findings can add valuable historical context to textual analysis. Through selected case studies, this lecture aims at Illuminating the complexities involved in the transmission of Greek texts between Byzantium and Italy, paying special attention to key moments in this process and the challenges that philologists encounter. This exploration is designed to be accessible to scholars from various fields, offering insights that extend beyond the immediate subject matter.
