Multilingualism and Gender in the Greco-Roman World
Professor James Clackson, Cambridge University
I intend to give a survey of different examples from Greek and Roman sources of cases where male speakers use Greek or Latin but female speakers use vernacular languages, and draw some conclusions about language choice, language vitality and language change from the period of Greek colonisation down to the end of the Roman Empire. I will present several case studies, assessing how we can use both sociolinguistic theory and diverse sources of evidence to build up a picture of ancient language use.
