Meeting in the Body of the Horse: Knowledge transfer between East and West
Professor Dr Jasmine Dum-Tragut (Paris-Lodron University Salzburg)
An interdisciplinary research project (2022-2025) led by the Austrian armenologist, linguist and equine scientist Jasmine Dum-Tragut is investigating the transfer of knowledge and cultural exchange in equine medicine, breeding and training across geographical, linguistic and cultural-religious borders. Based on medieval Armenian manuscripts and their written sources and translations, the research team studies and analyzes in depth equine texts between Christian Europe and Muslim Asia in the period between the 13th and 18th centuries.
The lecture will take an introductory look at the history of equine (medical) literature, then at the respective Armenian tradition, and will then address the knowledge transfer through interacting translations in Armenian, Arabic, Georgian, and early modern European equine literature.
