The computer scientist will hold the Chair of ‘Knowledge-Based Databases’ at the University of Lübeck for one year, starting on 1 April. One focus of this Chair is to develop methods to enrich data with knowledge about context, meaning and user intent, thereby making it intelligently usable.
At the CSMC, Sylvia Melzer heads the Data Linking Lab, an important platform for linking the humanities and computer sciences at the cluster. One of her key areas of focus is the application of AI systems in a humanities context, exemplified by the annual ‘Humanities-Centred AI’ workshop. As part of the 48th German Conference on Artificial Intelligence, the sixth edition of this event will take place this year as a joint workshop together with the ‘Third International Workshop on AI in Society, Education and Educational Research’ (further information to follow shortly).
The Chair of ‘Knowledge-Based Databases’ at the University of Lübeck, which Sylvia will hold until 31 March 2027, bridges the gap between cognitively inspired knowledge approaches and practical computer science, for example in human-centred AI, which enable machines to draw explainable conclusions based on distributed data sources.
During her deputy professorship, Sylvia will continue to work for the CSMC on a reduced basis.
