A long-term member of the CSMC, Silpsupa Jaengsawang leaves Hamburg to join the Department of Asian and North African Studies (Dipartimento di Studi sull'Asia e sull'Africa Mediterranea) at Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia, which is renowned for its exceptional diversity in language teaching.
Silpsupa Jaengsawang has been closely associated with the CSMC for many years. As an alumna of the centre’s Graduate School, she completed her PhD with a dissertation entitled The Relationship between Anisong Manuscripts and Rituals: A Comparative Study of the Lan Na and Lao Traditions. She subsequently contributed as a Research Associate at the Sonderforschungsbereich (SFB) from 2016 to 2019, and later at the UWA Cluster of Excellence from 2019 to 2023. Most recently, she led her own research project focusing on ‘Colophons in Lao Manuscripts from Luang Prabang: Exploring Production, Uses, and Interaction Between Sangha and Laity’.
With the start of the new academic year, she has taken up her new post in Venice, becoming the first native Thai speaker ever appointed as Assistant Professor for Thai Studies in Italy. This year, she is teaching Thai syntax to BA and MA students, as well as Southeast Asian Literature. Notably, she is also in charge of a newly launched Thai syntax class for MA students, the only one of its kind in the country. In addition to her teaching, Silpsupa will conduct research in Thai Studies and collaborate with the Southeast Asian Studies team on various projects.
The entire CSMC community wishes Silpsupa the very best for the future!
