Doing research on written artefacts implies bearing responsibility for the ethical treatment of the artefacts themselves, the people of the communities to which they belong, and the data obtained from studying them. A short lecture series deals with the complex demands researchers face at work.
Researchers can be faced with ethical dilemmas concerning their research topics, their responsibilities, the impact of their research on society, the way of conducting and publishing their research, and other aspects. Studying cultural heritage objects especially requires a global perspective that is sensitive towards different research contexts and attitudes in societies and states across the world. CSMC’s guidelines for Ethical and Responsible Research, developed by the Ethics Working Group at the Centre, provide colleagues with an overview of basic rules of conduct regarding other people, written artefacts, and research data.
With this short lecture series, we want to discuss considerations behind these ethical guidelines and examples from real life research with a wide range of scholars and students of UHH. The short lectures of 45 minutes (all starting sin tempo) are given by different members of CSMC. They will be held in hybrid format and are open to everyone interested in the topics. The full schedule is available on the registration page of the lecture series:
This short lecture series is the second of its kind at CSMC, following up on and developing further the themes that were discussed during the first edition of 'Handle with Care' in the 2022-2023 winter semester.
