Equity & Diversity Working Group
UWA’s Equity & Diversity Working Group is a scholarly forum dedicated to doing justice to the diversity and wealth of existing and potential written artefact practices and of the scholarship they can inspire.
The group examines the marginalisation processes that bear on written artefacts and their study and seeks to establish more inclusive scholarly practices in written artefact research. Through readings zooming in on different dimensions of marginalisation processes, in our monthly meetings we analyse exclusions in writing cultures – how certain groups of people have been prevented from writing or have been belittled or ignored as producers, users or students of written artefacts. As historical marginalisations are often embodied in the artefacts we study and reflected in our ways of doing research, we also examine the ethical, political, and intellectual stakes and implications of our research. Our goal is a written artefact research able to redress some of these historical marginalisations.
Besides reading and writing as a group, we also organise UWA’s yearly ED Lecture Series and provide project-specific guidance on how equity & diversity perspectives might matter to specific research projects.
