Writing Surfaces
Many different materials have been used as writing, drawing, or painting surfaces over the course of human history, including different rock types, metals, fired or unfired clay, bone, wax tablets, textiles, papyrus, palm leaves, bark, wood, bamboo strips, leather, parchment, and paper. Depending on the material, inscriptions were executed in inks, carved, or incised. In this contribution, we will present information about a range of material choices.
