Access to the collection
Access to the Collection
Access to consult the collection items at the National Laboratory for the Preservation and Conservation of Parchment and Manuscripts (NLPCPM) in Raqqada, Kairouan is by application and appointment only. The NLPCPM is primarily a secure conservation facility: it has to make special arrangements to provide working space to readers. Accordingly, it is unable to accommodate individuals who visit unexpectedly.
Applying for Access
Readers should apply to the National Heritage Institute (NHI), the NLPCPM’s parent organisation, at least one month in advance of their anticipated date of travel to Kairouan. It is only possible to visit the NLPCPM for two weeks at a time. Please send an official request for access in Arabic or French to the attention of the general director via this email address: directiongenerale-inp"AT"topnet.tn.
The request should comprise:
- An explanation of your research project
- A detailed description of the specific or type of collection items you would like to consult
- The preferred dates of your visit
- Proof of your job position and institutional affiliation or a letter describing your qualifications
- A photocopy of your passport
Please do not make any travel arrangements before the NHI approves your request.
Reaching the NLPCPM
The NLPCPM is located adjacent to the National Museum of Islamic Art in Raqqada, about 15 kilometres south of central Kairouan. The easiest way to reach the institution is by car or taxi. If coming by taxi, it is best to arrange for the driver to return and collect you at the end of the working day: due to the NLPCPM’s rural location, taxis are not easily available.
Working Hours
Readers may consult collection items at the NLPCPM from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, Monday to Friday.
Access on Arrival to the NLPCPM
To work at the NLPCPM, readers will need to show a hard copy of the NHI letter or email authorising their research and a proof of identification document. The proof of identification document must be original; photocopies will not be accepted. Only the following forms of identification are accepted:
- Tunisian citizens: driver’s licence, national identity card, or passport
- All others: passport
