Girls’ Day and Boys’ Day
Why do people write? What do they write with and on? How has writing shaped societies and cultures? And how has writing developed over time and in different cultures? On Girls’ Day and Boys’ Day, the CSMC is open to pupils who want to know more about these questions.
They will investigate what is known about writing, writing systems and different writing cultures, which scientific puzzles we are currently solving and how modern technology can help find new answers to old questions. In the process, pupils can experience the everyday work of researchers: what do you actually do when you do research? Who do you work with? What is difficult about it? What is exciting about it?
Our Girls’ day progamme includes activities on various material science methods to study the biological and chemical properties of manuscripts and other handwritten artefacts in order to learn more about the production of manuscripts. Our Boys’ Day programme includes hands-on research activities on Japanese book bindings, cuneiform tablets, graffiti, and Arabic manuscripts.
Our researchers are looking forward to talking to you and telling you about their everyday life and experiences at the university, in archives, and during their field research.
