Hands-on Workshop as Part of ‘Praxisjahr Restaurierung’
The Hamburg practical year in restoration (‘Hamburger Praxisjahr’) is unique in Germany. In addition to the practical work in the respective restoration studio, which forms the focus of the programme, the participants regularly come together for interdisciplinary lessons, practical seminars, and excursions. The CSMC’s Mobile Lab contributes to the curriculum with two full-day workshops per year.
The practical year is coordinated by the Museum of Hamburg History. As part of this programme, the participants come to the CSMC for two days, where they get to know the Cluster’s Mobile Lab and learn the basics of how to work with the available equipment. On the first day, members of the Mobile Lab give an introduction and demonstrate during a guided tour which analytical instruments and methods can be used to analyse cultural heritage objects. On the second day, the participants of the practical year can then try out these instruments and methods themselves and analyse their respective objects in order to answer their specific research questions on materiality, production, provenance or conservation.
